After a 2012 duck hunting trip on Tangier Island in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay, Craig Suro and friend Tim Hickey were inspired by the beauty of the island and struck by the plight of the area’s struggling watermen. Suro leveraged his background as an investor to assemble a diverse team that’s changing that way oysters are farmed and distributed in the area. We caught up with Craig and picked his brain on what he’s learned over the years.
If you weren’t an oyster farmer, what would you be doing?
Coaching college football. Strategy built around teamwork.
What advice would you give your 20-year-old self?
This one is easy. Travel as much as you possibly can, meet new and interesting people, building trusting relationships along the way.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
I think that much like success, happiness is a journey, not a destination. Pointedly, time with family. It’s irreplaceable.
